Our problem statement for this year's FLL project is "How to keep Divers Safe from Sharks". So, we met up with our experts and over the process, we found devices that divers used such as detterents (acoustic, electric, magnetic), dive horns to alert other divers, and diving knives. However, we saw that even with these existing solutions, there was still about 70 unprovoked attacks a year. So, we wondered, how can we reduce significantly the shark attacks? We reasearched things that attract sharks, and we found that sharks like crustateans, shiny, high contrast objects–due to their low vision–and splashing movements. So, this information led us to create our own MAJEK crab! This crab contains these characteristics that attract sharks so when a shark is right by you, you can shoot the crab in the opposite direction so the shark will go after the crab, and not you. But, we still had a problem. When we did a school survey, we found that many kids knew about sharks, but not how they could stay safe from them. This is how our second objective was created: increasing our outreach to educate as many people as we could. Once we gave our peers an informative brochure, we saw changes in their responses. We also saw that people were more comfortable with going in the water after learning how they could stay safe from possible threats. Through this project, we aim to help more divers with our solutions and MAJEK crab, giving them the confidence to go in the water. Thank you for reading our journey!
